Tips for Baking

• Replace vanilla extract with alcohol-free vanilla flavouring — standard vanilla extract contains alcohol. vanilla flavouring or vanilla paste without alcohol gives the same depth of flavour.
• Check your baking powder — most are but check the label if you are buying store-brand products.
• Use butter — in the UK, most butter is naturally clean but check for any added flavourings.
• Gelatine in decoration — if your recipe uses edible gelatine decorations, make sure they are or plant-based.
• Food colourings — most are but some red colourings historically contained cochineal (insect-derived). Check labels if this is a concern for you.
